Giving your child the healthiest, happiest start with lifestyle medicine-centric pediatric dermatology care

Beyond Skin Dermatology is proud to be an inclusive clinic. We welcome all individuals, regardless of age, life stage, and needs. Our team, led by Drs. Sang Kim and Maggie Kober, is also more than capable of addressing the wide range of needs that accompany such a diverse patient base.

So, you care for the needs of adults AND young children?

Yes! We do not have a minimum or maximum “age requirement.” That means you and your family enjoy seamless continuity of care from the professionals you already know and trust. Your child will not “age out” of our practice, and likewise, you do not have to wait for your child to be of a certain age before visiting us for the first time.

What conditions do you treat?

As a Board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Kim has the training and experience to detect, treat, and manage any condition that affects the hair, skin, nails, and mucous membranes/linings. In all, qualified dermatologists have the knowledge to care for more than 3,000 such conditions! Now, there are some skin concerns and diseases that are more prevalent among children. We have a lot of experience with these conditions since we have seen so many children with them.

What are the conditions that you treat most in children?

While atopic dermatitis or eczema affects 1 out of 10 Americans, it can affect up to one in five children aged 18 and younger. Acne affects individuals of all ages, too, and is the most common skin condition in the U.S. However, it usually starts in puberty and can take an emotional toll during these formative years. In fact, around 85% of the population will experience at least some acne between the ages of 12 and 24. Warts and wart-like molluscum contagiosum are highly contagious conditions. They tend to arise and spread among children because their immune systems are not fully developed yet.

How do you treat these conditions?

As a full-service dermatologic clinic, we have the onsite technologies and expertise to offer different treatment options tailored to your child’s unique needs. In fact, we have the capacity to provide alternative treatments when “front-line” therapies do not work effectively to improve symptoms and reduce flare-ups. Many conditions tend to be persistent and must be managed throughout childhood (as some of these conditions can and do get better as children get older, and they may go away completely). Depending on your child’s diagnosis, we could recommend a combination of topical/systemic medications, light-based therapies, immunotherapy (for allergic skin conditions), cryotherapy or freezing off warts or lesions, and injections. Of course, lifestyle medicine is a cornerstone of our practice and can be applied to manage almost any pediatric condition.

How do you apply lifestyle medicine to these conditions?

Many of these skin manifestations arise due to a complex interaction of the environment, your child’s unique DNA and immune system, their habits, diet, skincare products, and stress levels. We assess for potential triggers or contributors to flare-ups of the diagnosed disease. With this knowledge in hand, we can provide recommendations to modify the environment, effectively reducing exposure to animal dander, irritants, and other allergens to improve the frequency and severity of symptoms or “flares.”
