Expert medical dermatology care for the whole family, and with your best interests at heart
As a board-certified medical dermatologist, Dr. Sang Kim has the training and experience to prevent, diagnose, treat, and manage a whopping 3,000-plus conditions that affect the skin, hair, nails, and the mucous membranes or soft tissues that line and protect the body’s organs and cavities. This is what really sets us apart; we are a truly independent and solo practice led by a specialist who is an expert in many diseases that can affect these essential, often highly visible structures. And, while Beyond Skin Dermatology is well-equipped to treat myriad diseases, there are certain conditions our Denver area practice in Aurora, Colorado, sees commonly. These conditions can affect all members of your family, and you can develop them at different stages in your life. However, some may generally be more prevalent as youths or, likewise, in older adults.
What are some of the most common dermatological conditions that you treat?
We take a special interest and are known for detecting, treating, managing, and protecting against chronic inflammatory skin conditions. These conditions include acne, atopic dermatitis (eczema), and psoriasis. Dr. Kim is also passionate about evaluating and treating skin cancers and hair loss. Our expertise does not stop here. Other conditions and services that fall under the “medical dermatology” category at our office include:
- Rosacea
- Skin infections
- Nail disorders
- Aging skin
- Light therapy
- Patch testing
- Lifestyle dermatology
Shouldn’t I have “grown out” of acne?
Every patient is different. Some patients’ acne (and other skin concerns) tends to get better or even completely fades away as they mature. But the painful truth is that many of our patients do carry pimples and even very severe cystic acne with them well into adulthood. The problem may never have been treated properly or in a manner that gets sustained results. The American Academy of Dermatology Association also reports that adult acne affects up to 15% of women. Women may sometimes experience acne for the first time as adults. Hormonal changes are largely to blame.
Can eczema and psoriasis be “cured”?
Eczema is another condition that tends to arise in early childhood and can go away as quickly as it develops. However, for those who may never outgrow eczema or who are diagnosed later in life, there is technically no “cure” for it. The same can be said for psoriasis. However, the itching, rashes, plaques, and other symptoms of these diseases can be effectively managed. We provide tailored guidance and therapies to control eczema and psoriasis and minimize flares. These conditions are made for guidance on lifestyle changes because they often arise due to a complex confluence of factors – from your genes, immune system, and diet to your environment, stress levels, and personal habits.
As needed, we may recommend a combination of these lifestyle changes, as well as topical medications, phototherapy (light-based therapy), and systemic drugs that work throughout your body to reduce inflammation, minimize the risk of infection and other serious complications, and reduce the risk of flare-ups.
You list lifestyle dermatology as a service – what is that?
The examples mentioned above, where we advise on modifiable triggers for eczema and psoriasis, show lifestyle dermatology in action. We can heal the skin from the inside out by addressing six pillars:
- A nutritious diet
- Consistent physical activity/exercise
- Managing unhealthy stress (distress)
- Smoking cessation (and avoidance of other risk factors for disease)
- Strong social networks
- Sustained quality sleep
Dr. Kim also has the credentials to back up this approach to skin, hair, and nail health. As a diplomate of the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine, Dr. Kim has demonstrated advanced and rigorous training in the seamless integration of skin care, cosmetic and medical treatments, and holistic health practices. Such knowledge, passion, and experience lend themselves well to maintaining treatment outcomes by promoting long-lasting health and a healthy, tailored skin care and lifestyle routine.
Am I at risk of developing skin cancer?
Anyone, regardless of skin tone and ethnicity, can develop skin cancer. That being said, the prevalence of melanoma (the most deadly of skin cancers) is ~30 times higher among non-Hispanic Caucasian individuals than people of color with more melanated skin. Those with skin that burns easily, blonde or red hair, and light eyes are at particular risk. Other risk factors include a history of five or more severe sunburns between the ages of 15 and 20 – which increases the risk of developing melanoma by 80%! Our specialists are experts in surgical excision/removal of lesions as well as Mohs micrographic surgery, which is considered to be the gold standard precision treatment for many common cancers and challenging tumors (i.e., those with uneven borders, in functionally important and highly visible areas, and with aggressive growth rates).
Why should I turn to Beyond Skin Dermatology for help with hair loss?
As but one example, Dr. Kim trained with the world’s leading authorities on scarring alopecia during his residency at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He is a compassionate and skilled provider of personalized hair loss evaluation and management treatments.
